Location: Toronto Metropolitan Area – Ontario, Canada
The market analyst will conduct research about subscription, recurring revenue, and “as-a-service” business models then produce written research briefs and articles. Ordway’s research team produces educational and consultative articles for finance and accounting leaders at SaaS, cloud, fintech, AI, marketplace, and streaming media companies.
The research analyst reports directly to the Head of Marketing. S/he will interact regularly with other members of the marketing organization as well as the product management and sales organizations.
Job Responsibilities
- Reviewing market research and industry benchmarks from venture capital, private equity firms, and Wall Street analysts.
- Analyzing investor presentations, SEC regulatory filings, and earnings transcripts from publicly traded companies.
- Following publications from thought leaders such as LinkedIn posts, Substack newsletters, Medium articles, and podcasts.
The analyst must be able to ingest and synthesize a large corpus of external research, news, and media and then take the relevant information and put it into structured documents. Research topics and writing assignments will focus on topics such as:
- Financial Reporting – Review the financial performance, accounting policies, and revenue projections of publicly traded companies to understand trends and benchmarks.
- Operating Metrics – Study the definitions, formulas, and benchmarks for metrics like ARR/MRR, ACV/TCV, net and gross retention, LTV/CAC, CAC payback period, and Rule of 40.
- Pricing Strategies – Analyze various subscription, usage, and transaction pricing models to compare the metrics, discounting, packaging, presentation, and billing policies used by different companies.
- Capital Markets – Monitor financial news to track IPOs, mergers and acquisitions, and funding rounds (series A,B,C) from venture capital and private equity firms.
- Technology Vendors – Compare the product features, hiring patterns, and go-to-market strategies of technology vendors in the ERP, CRM, CPQ, finance, and accounting sectors.
Desired Skills and Qualifications
- B.S. in finance, accounting, business, economics, or another analytical major.
- Business writing skills to author short-form articles (200-500 words).
- Curious about understanding innovation, business models, and entrepreneurship.
- Passionate about pursuing a career in the software and technology industries.
- Familiarity with accounting and finance concepts during educational or professional work is a plus.
